Since late December 2019, we have been without our lobby elevator and the loss is obvious. We are forced to redirect visitor traffic to use the stairs or Wing 3 elevator. Staff must take residents to physical or occupational therapy and restorative therapy activities by way of the memory unit. It is not ideal to have traffic coming and going on our memory unit like this. Fortunately, we have talented staff, patient vendors and understanding families while we work at fundraising for the lobby elevator replacement. Overall project cost is estimated at $130,000.
Soon we will start the work on Wing 3 elevator in order to meet the new regulations being implemented May 1, 2020. Such upgrades include a new display panel for the interior car buttons, an emergency telephone and modern style closure sensors. The work will be completed within one day, but extra planning is in place to ensure daily activities for residents and staff are mostly unaffected. Estimated costs for Wing 3 elevator upgrades is $10,500.
Friendship Home has partnered with USDA Rural Development for this project through a grant opportunity that would supplement up to one-third of the estimated project expense. We are obligated to a fundraising match before any work can begin.
We have a goal of completing the elevator upgrade work in 2020 and beginning the process for HVAC upgrades for Wings 3 and 7 by 2021. The current system is original to the 1970’s addition and needs replacement boilers, modern room units and modern digital controls. The number one goal of the HVAC system upgrades is to improve quality of stay for our residents as well as ensure building operations efficiency and cost management. Early estimates indicate this will be in the range of $195,000.
There are lots of ways to get involved with these efforts.
Let Amy Madsen, Marketing Assistant know if you would like to volunteer help for the Golf Tournament or if you would like to partner up on other fundraising events.
Below is a list of ways for anyone wanting to contribute to the cost of this project. As always, checks may be dropped off or mailed to 714 N Division St and payable to Friendship Home Foundation.

Grain or Livestock. If considering an outright gift, farmers should look into the value of giving grain or livestock. When the producer transfers legal ownership of grain or livestock to the charity before it is sold, the producer will not realize taxable income from the sale, thus minimizing taxes. The individual can still, however, claim all production costs as deductible expenses for income tax purposes. Because there are specific rules, work with your tax advisor before completing this type of gift.
Retirement Plan Assets. Often overlooked, retirement plan assets [IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan] are a simple and tax-smart way to give. When left to heirs, retirement plan assets are subject to income and estate taxes (if applicable). If given to a charitable organization, the assets transfer tax free and the estate qualifies for a charitable deduction. To make a gift, simply list the organization on the plan's beneficiary designation form, which you can request from the plan's custodian.
